Roseanne Barr is headed back to television.
Barr, 73, spent the last year secretly filming a new comedy series called "Meemaw" in Texas. The ousted ABC sitcom star will play a family matriarch set on throwing her granddaughter an over the top bat mitzvah, according to Page Six. The series is looking for a distribution partner.
“It’s every bit as revolutionary as ‘The Roseanne Show,’ if not more, and my work has improved with time,” Barr told the outlet. “I want everybody who disagrees in a family to sit in the same room and just laugh and go, ‘Yeah, maybe I was an a--hole that time. Well, you were an a--hole this time. Oh, we're all a--holes. Let's get a beer."
The eight-episode family comedy tells a semi-autobiographical series about a woman from
a "very liberal East Coast Jewish family," per Page Six. After the woman gets disinherited, she pursues a lower-class dream in Texas.
"I thought now would be a great time for people to actually hear from a Jew," she added.
Barr first wrote the series with Allan Stephan, a "Roseanne" writer, which followed a rural Alabama farmer working in the cannabis and magic mushroom business. She later scraped the idea, and hired Allen Covert as a third writer.
Calling herself an "equal opportunity destroyer," Barr broke down the comedy in the series.
“My daughters are super woke and of course I love them, so I put in jokes for them, too, like I did on ‘Roseanne,’” she said. “I make fun of everybody ’cause everybody deserves to be made fun of who’s in power. So, I’ve got some great jokes about Republicans that the lefties are gonna love.”
Barr began filming "Meemaw" in November 2025 and raised money from private investors for the union production. She even sought out aid from Elon Musk − SpaceX and Tesla are based in Austin − but, "he wouldn't call me back," she said.
Though Musk isn't involved, there's plenty of other stars in the cast, including "The Sopranos" alum Drea de Matteo, who plays Barr's daughter, and "Kingpin's" Randy Quaid, playing her husband. Barr joked that she and Quaid have a handful of "overwhelming love scenes," adding, "The extras are gonna be released on OnlyFans. I’m kidding!"
Omar Gooding, Indy Bugg and Doug Jones are also in the cast, as well as guest stars Jon Lovitz, Tony Hinchcliffe and Kim Congdon.
The new show comes eight years after Barr was fired from the revival of her sitcom "Roseanne" in 2018.
From 1988 to 1997, Barr helmed the self-titled ABC sitcom "Roseanne,” which followed the Conners, a working-class American family. The nine-season series featured other stars like John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Michael Fishman and Sara Gilbert.
The sitcom was revived in 2018, but abruptly ended after Barr called Valerie Jarrett, a Black former senior adviser to President Barack Obama, the offspring of "Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes"in a Twitter reply. Barr later apologized to Jarrett and deleted her account.
ABC canceled the popular revival hours after the post, with then ABC’s Entertainment president Channing Dungey calling it “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.” The series later ran without Barr and changed its name to "The Conners.” The revival ultimately ran for seven seasons before wrapping in 2025.
