I drove the 2027 Rivian R2 for a week for USA TODAY Cars. The American electric SUV still retains my favorite elements of a Rivian EV in a smaller and more affordable package.
The R2 is making major waves in the industry as the brand's cheapest offering so far.
Here's what drivers and car buyers need to know about the new Rivian R2 after a week of testing.
What stands out about the 2027 Rivian R2?
The Rivian R2 has a unique front end and headlights that distinguish it from most other electric vehicles. Its frunk, minimalist cabin, and advanced software also set it apart from rivals.

Rugged SUV styling and exceptional performance also set the R2 apart from other EVs.
Performance, handling, and efficiency: How does it drive?
Rivian's cheapest EV accelerates quickly and has precise steering. It's fun to drive and has enough range to be practical for
drivers with access to home charging or direct current EV chargers.
The 2027 Rivian R2 produces 350 horsepower and 355 pound-feet of torque. The vehicle has 275 miles of standard driving range.
The R2 has smooth regenerative braking, which helps preserve its driving range while on the road. It feels sporty and capable.
Interior, tech and comfort: What's it like inside?
The R2 has a refined and uncluttered interior. Its seats are comfortable, and it's loaded with plenty of great tech features.

The 2027 Rivian R2 has a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Rivian does not offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but you can access Google Maps from the screen and play music via Bluetooth audio streaming.
It features plenty of easily accessible controls on the steering wheel. I am a huge fan of Android Auto, but I found the Rivian R2's native software just as convenient.
Will the Rivian R2 fit your lifestyle?
Rivian's electric SUV is 185.6 inches long, 84.7 inches wide with mirrors, and 66.9 inches tall. It has 9.6 inches of ground clearance, which is great for its segment.
Ground clearance makes it easier for vehicles to avoid damage while off-roading. The R2 is roughly the size of a BMW X3.

It has 40.4 inches of rear legroom, which makes the SUV's rear row incredibly spacious. The EV has 28.7 cubic feet of cargo space, which is adequate.
It also has 5.2 cubic feet of frunk space for small item storage. I took it on a grocery haul, and it had sufficient room for my purchases.
The R2 will fit your lifestyle if you're a commuter or have a small family. Its second row has plenty of space for car seats.
Price, value, and competitors: Is the Rivian R2 worth buying?
The 2027 Rivian R2 starts at $44,990. It comes in three trims, but the Performance trim is the only one that drivers can buy until late 2026.

The most affordable Standard trim ($44,990) hits the streets in spring 2027. Rivian's Premium trim ($53,990) is expected in late 2026. I tested the R2 Performance trim ($57,990), which is the quickest, most powerful version of the electric SUV.
It's worth buying for drivers who don't mind regularly charging an EV instead of gassing up an internal combustion engine or hybrid vehicle. I would consider buying the base model Standard trim because it delivers great value for under $45,000.
The R2 competes against models like the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Hyundai's small electric SUV is the most affordable of the three, starting at $35,250, while Tesla's Model Y is the more well-rounded option for everyday commuters.
The Rivian R2 is the best option for drivers who want a family vehicle that can also conquer obstacles off-road.
Final Verdict: Who should buy the 2027 Rivian R2?
If you're the average EV shopper, the R2 may not be the best pick for you.
Its high ground clearance and power make it a capable adventure vehicle. It can double as a daily driver, but there are more affordable EV options on the market that are less specialized and niche.

If you do love the great outdoors and want an EV that can explore trails and help you experience the best of nature, there are few better options than the R2. When it comes to performance, capability, and software, the 2027 Rivian R2 is easily one of the best electric vehicles I've tested all year.
