International Cat Day is getting an awards-show twist this year.
Merrick Purrfect Bistro unveiled the winners of its inaugural Purrfect Choice Awards during a livestream hosted by content creator Wendy Ly on Saturday, Aug. 8, also known as International Cat Day. The virtual show celebrated the quirks, habits and strong opinions that make cats stars of their households — and, often, the internet.
Six cats were selected across personality-driven categories, from Purrfectly Playful and Best Cat Napper to Work From Home Boss and Foodie of the Year.
Bryan, a talkative cat with plenty to say, won both the Conversation Companion category and the show’s Best in Show grand prize.
Bryan was handpicked by Merrick Purrfect Bistro after an entry that, according
to the brand, “stopped the room.”
The grand-prize winner will receive a trophy, a personalized multistory cat house and a six-month supply of cat food.
Here are the fabulous feline winners:
- Purrfectly Playful: Oliver, a cat who turns everything into a toy and never runs out of energy.
- Best Cat Space: Eggy, whose carefully curated environment is as particular as the cat is.
- Best Cat Napper: Jack, honored for elevating sleep to a professional-level sport and napping anywhere without apology.
- Conversation Companion: Bryan, a cat with a point of view who makes sure people hear it.
- Work From Home Boss: Luna, the keyboard-loving cat who is not interrupting the workflow but is the workflow.
- Foodie of the Year: Moo, a feline who turns every meal into an event and knows exactly what belongs in the bowl.
Each category winner will receive a trophy and Merrick Purrfect Bistro products.
Ly previously told USA TODAY that great cat content comes from paying attention to the odd, unplanned moments that make each pet distinct rather than trying to force a trend.
“Sometimes your cat can’t act,” Ly said. “You’re just recording and you’re catching them in the act.”
