The rise of Boy Throb is not your typical boy band story.
One Direction, the Jonas Brothers and NSYNC all leveraged industry connections and blockbuster TV moments. Boy Throb instead went viral on TikTok in late 2025 for a video that didn’t even feature them singing. But they established two goals right away: Win a Grammy and get their fourth member, Darshan Magdum, a US O-1 visa.
Magdum is an Indian citizen, and hasn't been able to join the group in real life, instead performing over video call. His disembodied head has been seen on a laptop screen or a projector behind the group onstage, from their early days of singing at nursing homes to more recent sold-out concerts with major pop stars like Kesha.
The group boasts more than 1.3 million followers
on TikTok, and over 978,000 on Instagram, and they all seemed elated on Monday, Aug. 3, when the band announced in a celebratory video that Magdum's visa was approved.
But their goofy vibe makes some think that the whole project is a practical joke. The conspiracies run deep. There's speculation that Boy Throb has its own industry connection, namely Canadian TV star and comedian Nathan Fielder.
Here's what to know about the band and the rationale behind the Fielder theory.
Boy Throb's beginnings
Band members Evan Papier and Anthony Key each auditioned for "American Idol" but didn't make it very far. They told the BBC that they later connected online over their flubbed auditions. Zachary Sobania and Darshan Magdum were recruited virtually, according to the piece.
Each member had their own social media presence before the band formed. Sobania used to share dance videos that achieved hundreds of thousands of views. Papier shared similar content, first going viral in 2021. Key used to have a viral ASMR page, where he and his friend dressed as characters from the video game Genshin Impact and whispered into the microphone.
They all came together to form Boy Throb in October 2025. They sourced the name from the second most-liked TikTok comment on their original video. The first most-liked comment was "Epstein's Angels," which they decided against.

Heading into the new year, they began releasing music videos on YouTube, including "FINGER," which sits just under 1 million views as of writing. It's professional and clean. It begs the viewer to take them seriously, in stark contrast to that first viral video, when they introduced themselves to the world.
In the video, each member says their name to the rhythm of the backing track, but it cuts out for Magdum, who's seen on a computer screen, stating that he's "stuck in India." The video takes an awkward pause, stalling on dead air. The comedic timing seems intentional.

"Oh, I'd like Darshan in the USA," the group sings in a parody cover of Sabrina Carpenter's "Manchild."
"Department of State, give the time and the place, so don't be shy. Darshan is all we need!" they croon in a cover of Olivia Dean's "Man I Need."

Darshan’s visa
Darshan Magdum has been seeking a US O-1 Visa, which is reserved for individuals with extraordinary ability in the arts, among other disciplines. O-1 visas are not easy to get. An artist needs to have considerable proof that they’re an expert in their field.
Magdum posted singing videos on social media before joining Boy Throb, attracting significant attention starting in 2024. Celebrity vocalists from Bruno Mars to PinkPantheress have reposted his content. Although he would argue that this demonstrates “extraordinary ability,” it wasn’t until Boy Throb reached national acclaim this year that Magdum’s visa was approved.
Their first concert
In May, Boy Throb sold out the Bowery Ballroom in New York City, showing that there was a living, breathing fanbase, not just profile pictures cracking jokes in the comment sections of their videos.
Scenes from the show pictured a packed audience, captivated by the men onstage and cheering loudly when Magdum joined on a laptop screen and was held up in the air for all to see. The group later sang a tribute to One Direction, covering the ballad “Night Changes” as the crowd silently swayed.
Boy Throb’s audience seemed to know the song well – in many ways, the band is geared toward an audience of grown-up Directioners looking for that spark again, even if it’s ironic.

Speculation that they're a Nathan Fielder plot
Boy Throb’s rise to fame seems fishy to some skeptics. Several internet users believe that Fielder might be the man pulling the strings.
Fielder came to prominence for his Comedy Central show "Nathan For You"in the 2010s, in which he pitched crackpot marketing ideas to small business owners, and famously created a “Dumb Starbucks."
He has pulled off strange schemes just to help out one person. In the Season 3 finale of "Nathan For You," Fielder spent months learning how to tightrope walk so that he could help a local man named Corey become a "hero." It would make sense that Fielder's solution to finding someone a visa would be to start a boy band.
Plus, in June 2026, Boy Throb announced a three-city tour called the Rehearsal Tour – Nathan Fielder’s latest show is "The Rehearsal" on HBO. In March, a Redditor shared a screenshot from one of Boy Throb’s TikTok videos to the /r/TheRehearsal/ subreddit, highlighting a masked person in the back. “I’m convinced this is Nathan at the start of a Boy Throb video,” they wrote.
Another video was shared to the /r/TheRehearsal/ subreddit at the end of July, showing another masked person with sunglasses and a hat dancing in the balcony of a Boy Throb concert in New York.
It’s unclear who the disguised figure is, or whether Boy Throb is playing into the Fielder suspicion by seemingly naming their tour after his show. A spokesperson for Fielder did not offer a response; neither did a rep from Boy Throb's team. Fans of both will just have to wait for Boy Throb's Grammy acceptance speech if the day ever comes.
