Carlos Alcaraz has two rounds in the books since a wrist injury forced him off the tour in April. On Day 8 of the 2026 US Open, his test is No. 20 seed Tommy Paul, into the second week on home turf with
a New York crowd that will lean his way. Alcaraz had to save two break points on Friday night to get out of his match alive. Paul won't be as forgiving.
Aryna Sabalenka has no such worries. Three matches into the tournament, she has lost just eight games. Now, she faces Taylor Townsend, a player she has never faced before. Townsend's lefty serve-and-volley game has bothered better players. We'll find out if it bothers Sabalenka too.
Then there is Ben Shelton, who got off the court at 2:15 a.m. Saturday morning after four sets against Denis Shapovalov. Less than 36 hours later, he's back out there against Stefanos Tsitsipas. We'll see how quickly Shelton can recover.
Emma Navarro is riding the best form of her tournament. She needed just two sets to knock out Wimbledon finalist Karolina Muchova, the No. 7 seed. She did it without losing a game on the Grandstand Court, where she's now 6-0 over two years.
Jessica Pegula had a rougher path to get to Sunday. She dropped the first set to Leylah Fernandez 6-1 before turning it around, blaming herself afterward for footwork she called "a little lazy to start off." She'll need more than that against Sorana Cirstea.
