President Donald Trump announced Friday that the United States will create a Space Academy to train officers who can serve in the sixth branch of the military.
"It's clear that we will need to educate and train an entire generation of skilled service members – engineers and civil operators and everything else to do what we have to do," Trump said in the announcement at NASA in Houston.
Trump signed an executive order to begin the process of creating the academy aligned with the U.S. Space Force. He said he has not chosen a location but quipped that he knew where people in the room would like it to be located.
"You think of West Point, and you think of Annapolis, and you think of the Air Force Academy and you think of the Coast Guard Academy," Trump
said. "They're all great, but we're going to have an academy (for) what the people in this room love the most."
Trump signed a bill creating the Space Force in 2019.
