Amanda Seyfried is excited for the third "Mamma Mia!" movie. But she, like her fans, might have to wait a while longer.
Judy Craymer, who produced the stage show and both "Mamma Mia!" movies, "wants to do it," Seyfried told USA TODAY during an exclusive interview at a Vote Mama campaign event on Sept. 25.
"She would do anything to get us together," Seyfried says. "It seems inevitable. I remember us saying, like, it can't be another 10 years till we do another one. And it's been, next year will be 10 years since we shot the last one, so I'm like, what is happening?"
Speculation about a third "Mamma Mia!" film has swirled for years, and gained heat in February when NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley told Deadline Hollywood, "Yes, I’m
going to say right now that there will be a 'Mamma Mia! 3.'"
But the third movie isn't coming any time soon, Seyfried told USA TODAY. "I wish there was a script," she says. "I feel like we're all kind of too busy right now."
And then, of course, there is the issue of Meryl Streep's character, Donna, having died in the 2018 sequel.
"We just have to figure out how to get Meryl in there," Seyfried says. "So if anyone has any ideas, that would be helpful. Because she's dead. Not my idea!"

Amanda Seyfried wants Sophie to have a family in 'Mamma Mia! 3'
If and when there is a third movie, Seyfried says she's excited to see her character, Sophie, take on a family of her own.
In the second movie, Sophie gives birth to her first child, a boy she names Donny. Seyfried says she hopes Sophie would have a second child in the third movie, and maybe get remarried.
"The modern, mixed family," Seyfried says. "It's always important to see, I think, for people."
She adds that Dominic Cooper, who plays her husband Sky in the first two films, "could just be, like, a friend."
Seyfried's own daughter was a baby during the filming of the sequel. "My daughter was asleep on the director's shoulder during 'Mamma Mia! 2,' " Seyfried says. "Like, I have pictures of her asleep on his shoulder."
"Mamma Mia!" movies are always a lot of work, Seyfried says, but she'd be excited to see her daughter be part of it.
"That would be really nice, because she really loves it," she says. "Really, a family affair."
