More than 1 million eggs have already been delivered to Texas food banks, with millions more expected in the coming weeks as part of a settlement.
The deliveries include more than 1.7 million eggs already distributed to food banks statewide, with another 5.3 million scheduled for delivery in the coming weeks.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxtonannounced on Sept. 8 that the egg distribution follows after his office secured settlements with three national egg producers – Cal-Maine Foods, Centrum/Versova and Hickman's Egg Ranch.
"After securing 7 million eggs for the people of Texas, I am excited to announce that Texans will now have an opportunity to receive cartons of free eggs in communities across the state," Paxton said in a statement. "I will continue
to help our families put food on the table and do everything within my power to lower prices and help Texans who are struggling to make ends meet."
The settlement was announced in June after Texas and other states worked with the Department of Justice to sue the companies on antitrust claims stemming from an alleged conspiracy to inflate egg prices between 2022 and 2025.
Under the agreements, the companies will donate 7 million eggs to Texas food banks. Additionally, the companies will pay a combined $3.3 million to participating states.
These ongoing deliveries are being coordinated with Feeding Texas, the largest hunger-relief organization in Texas, according to the attorney general's office.
The 17 food banks participating are:
- North Texas Food Bank (Plano): 842,400 eggs
- Tarrant Area Food Bank (Fort Worth): 842,400 eggs
- Food Bank of West Central Texas (Abilene): 140,400 eggs
- Wichita Falls Area Food Bank (Wichita Falls): 140,400 eggs
- East Texas Food Bank (Tyler): 280,800 eggs
- Central Texas Food Bank (Austin): 561,600 eggs
- San Antonio Food Bank (San Antonio): 464,600 eggs
- Houston Food Bank (Houston): 1,544,400 eggs
- Coastal Bend Food Bank (Corpus Christi): 280,800 eggs
- El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank (El Paso): 280,800 eggs
- Food Bank of the Golden Crescent (Victoria): 140,400 eggs
- High Plains Food Bank (Amarillo): 140,400 eggs
- South Plains Food Bank (Lubbock): 140,400 eggs
- West Texas Food Bank (Odessa): 280,800 eggs
- Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley (Pharr): 561,600 eggs
- South Texas Food Bank (Laredo): 280,800 eggs
- Southeast Texas Food Bank (Beaumont): 140,400 eggs
