Scottie Scheffler went six months and 22 days this year without winning a golf tournament. He ends the season winning $10 million and the Tour Championship.
The world's top-ranked player closed the Tour Championship on Sunday, Aug. 30 with a final round 66 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta to finish 16-under for the tournament. It marked Scheffler's 22nd career PGA Tour win and his second FedEx Cup win in three years.
Scheffler started the day three shots behind runner-up Viktor Hovland, but caught him on the 10th hole and then passed him on the 16th for good.
Five times this season, Scheffler finished second.
He won the American Express in January for his 20th Tour title. Then
he spent the spring and most of the summer watching someone else lift the trophy on Sunday. He had 10 top-10s and did not win again until Aug. 16 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He won that one by eight.
But two weeks ago, he was battling through throat ulcers and blisters on his hands after being diagnosed with hand, foot and mouth disease.
In 19 FedEx Cups, only two men had ever won it more than once. Tiger Woods in 2007 and 2009, and Rory McIlroy in 2016, 2019 and 2022. Scheffler is the third.
Hovland, who won in 2023, was also trying to become the third multiple winner here himself. He shot a 2-over 72 and finished second, three shots behind Scheffler. Ryan Gerard finished third, one shot behind Hovland. Alex Fitzpatrick, Jacob Bridgeman, first-day leader Min Woo Lee, Russell Henley, Rory McIlroy, Chirs Gotterup and Ludvig Aberg all finished tied for fourth at 11-under.
