AGT, meet LAPD.
The Los Angeles Police Department congratulated their mariachi band, Los Servidores, for their recent performance on “America’s Got Talent,” according to a social media post on Wednesday, July 22.
The law enforcement personnel were seen walking on stage in uniform in an episode clip shared the day prior. Moments later, they returned with instruments and performed a song that Spice Girls’ Mel B, a judge, said she recognized.
“At first when you started, I was like, ‘What are they saying?’ And then I recognized the song, ‘Walking on Sunshine,’” Scary Spice said. “And what I like is that you’ve taken a song and made it mariachi. I’ve never heard that before. I like that a lot.”
In a clip, one of the mariachi performers described the band
as a group of law enforcement that gather and sing “for our community throughout the Southern California area.”
“With 4 votes and a standing ovation, our officers are moving on to the next round, bringing with them timeless Los Angeles culture, as well as the iconic LAPD look,” the Los Angeles Police Department said.
Los Servidores’ Instagram page described the group as being composed of LAPD and “multiple” Southern California law enforcement agencies.
The USA TODAY Network reached out to the Los Angeles Police Department for comment on Los Servidores' appearance, and for details about the law enforcement agencies that members represent.
“I don’t think we were expecting that,” Simon Cowell said, adding that he thought they’d be a choir.
“Then you started to play, and I thought, ‘This is very happy music,’” he said. “And most importantly, the audience loved this audition. I could tell.”
Sofía Vergara, actress and judge, said she “loved” the performance.
Cowell commented that this would make for a TV police drama because they’re singing.
“Murder and mariachi. Tonight at 9,” Howie Mandel said in response.
When is ‘America’s Got Talent’?
Season 21 of “America’s Got Talent” airs on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. PDT. New episodes will air twice a week every Tuesday and Wednesday later in the season, according to NBC.
