The most fuel-efficient mainstream car for 2026 is a hybrid hatchback that has been around for decades. It's a Toyota hybrid that initially didn't get much love from auto enthusiasts, but has evolved to become more stylish, practical and appealing to all kinds of drivers.
Toyota's Prius debuted in 1997 in Japan and came to North America in 2000. Over two decades later, the Prius has become a huge part of the Japanese automaker's American portfolio and its powertrain inspired multiple standard hybrid Toyotas.
The Prius is the most efficient mainstream car for 2026. Here's how much it costs to refuel when factoring in today's high gas prices.
How much does it cost to refuel?
The 2027 Toyota Prius has an 11.3-gallon gas tank. The national average gas price as of Sept. 11 stands at $4.29,
according to AAA, so it costs $48.48 on average to fully refuel the new Prius in America. This may sounds pricey, but the Prius' gas mileage and driving range reveal the true appeal of the iconic hybrid nameplate.
Toyota's 2027 Prius achieves a whopping 57 miles per gallon in the city and 56 miles per gallon on the highway. The hybrid car is able to travel for an astonishing 644 miles on a full tank of gas.
The average American driver travels for 42 miles a day, says Axios. So, $48.48 could last some American commuters 15 days of driving. For perspective, the 2026 Honda Civic gas sedan has an average driving range of 446 miles on a full tank. It'd cost $53.19 to refuel the Civic's 12.4-gallon gas tank, which only last around 10 days, forcing drivers to refuel three times a month.
Toyota's Prius has a significantly lower monthly and annual fuel costs than any other gas or hybrid mainstream vehicle on the market. The Prius saves its drivers hundreds of dollars a year in fuel costs and thousands of dollars over long periods of ownership.
Why is the Toyota Prius so efficient?
The Toyota Prius features a hybrid powertrain system that includes electric motors. It uses internal combustion to burn fuel but also drives power to the wheels using electric energy generated from the motors. This allows the small car to travel further distances than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles while burning less fuel for motion.
Regenerative braking and deceleration also convert kinetic energy into driving range for the Prius by feeding its self-charging hybrid battery. This combination of internal combustion, electrical energy and kinetic energy mixed with the car's relatively lightweight build makes it the most efficient mainstream vehicle of the year.
Should you buy a 2027 Toyota Prius?
I haven't tested the latest Prius model year, but I did test the 2026 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid and found it to be much more exciting than I anticipated. The Prius was recently redesigned for the 2023 model year and has become more powerful and stylish than the previous generation.
The 2027 Toyota Prius starts at $28,755. It's a great new car option for drivers who want a budget-conscious daily driver for commuting. Its efficiency and style make it a steal for car buyers who want a new vehicle under $30K.
