From bad to worse.
The Miami Dolphins are in the midst of what has been a nightmare season so far. They are 0-3 and haven't even held a lead in any of those contests. Now Miami is set to be without its star running back for a long time.
De'Von Achane exited the Dolphins' Week 3 contest with a knee injury and didn't return. Head coach Jeff Hafley told reporters after the game that the team was still gathering information, but it didn't "sound very optimistic" for the 24-year-old.
Achane just inked a four-year $64 million contract extension with the team during the offseason. That decision to secure his financial future appears to be a good one, especially in the wake of Sunday's injury.
Here's what to know.
How long is De'Von Achane out?
Achane suffered a torn ACL and will miss
the rest of the season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport.
The explosive running back was clearly the Dolphins best player on offense. It means that a challenging season for Miami is now only going to get harder, especially as Hafley evaluates the roster in his first season.
If there is a silver lining for Achane, it's that the injury happened early in the season. Given the timing, it would be a surprise if he was in danger of missing Week 1 in 2027.
De'Von Achane injury update
Achane suffered a torn ACL.
It confirms the bad news that Hafley alluded to after the game on Sunday. The coach told reporters after the game that "it does not sound very optimistic" about Achane's knee injury.
The team was still in the process of gathering information at that time.
Achane was ruled out of the Dolphins' Week 3 contest with a knee injury.
He was spotted on the sideline wearing his jersey in the second half, but didn't have pads on. The 24-year-old was initially listed as questionable to return after leaving early in the first quarter.
The running back was seen walking back to the locker room shortly after being evaluated in the medical tent. He did appear to be walking much better after exiting the tent.
It's notable that the injury is to Achane's knee, considering his head was twisted by a Chiefs defender on the play where he got hurt.
When did De'Von Achane get hurt?
Achane exited with around 10:35 remaining in the first quarter.
It came after an 11-yard rush to give Miami a first down. The Dolphins later cappped off the 17-play drive with a touchdown from Achane's backup, Ollie Gordon II.
Dolphins RB depth chart
Here are the remaining running backs on Miami's depth chart:
- Ollie Gordon II
- Jaylen Wright
Gordon, who was active instead of Wright in Week 3, figures to be the lead back going forward. The former Oklahoma State star isn't as explosive as Achane, meaning the Dolphins will undergo somewhat of an adjustment to their offense.
