Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years behind bars.
The disgraced movie mogul's sentencing took place Wednesday, Sept. 23 in a New York federal court, one year after he was convicted of a first-degree criminal sexual act stemming from the assault of former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006.
Weinstein was initially given a 23-year sentence for a 2020 conviction of rape and sexual assault charges, but the case was overturned four years later. The retrial took place in 2025, putting some of the defining accusations of his original #MeToo case back in the spotlight.
A 12-person jury ultimately handed down only one guilty verdict for Weinstein's crimes involving Haley, but did not deliver the same for the other two charges. He was acquitted
of a second first-degree criminal sexual act stemming from his alleged assault of Kaja Sokola in 2002 when she was a 16-year-old aspiring actress.
The judge also declared a mistrial on a count of third-degree rape of Jessica Mann after one juror refused to continue deliberations, and prosecutors later declined to pursue another trial. In a June press release, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg attributed the decision to focusing on getting justice through Weinstein's sentence in Haley's case.
"We also shared our recommendation to the court that Mr. Weinstein be sentenced to 20 years in prison, which would account for the significant harms his actions have caused Ms. Haley," Bragg said. "I want survivors of sexual violence in Manhattan to know that we believe you, and we will fight for you. We stand with survivors, today and every day."
Throughout his legal troubles, Weinstein has denied ever having nonconsensual sex or assaulting anyone. When the verdict for his retrial came in June 2025, his representative Juda Engelmayer said, "We take the wins where we get them. And the acquittal on the Sokola charge was a major one. A conviction there would have reset the sentencing clock entirely."
Engelmayer further noted the guilty first-degree criminal sexual act conviction should fall under time served, "and that clock is already running."
Weinstein, once a Hollywood institution, is currently serving a separate 16-year prison sentence after being found guilty of rape in a 2022 case in California.
