A flood watch is in effect across South Florida today, as other parts of the state deal with heavy rains and flash flooding.
The flood watch is in effect across "all of South Florida" through Monday evening. "Bands of heavy rain" will move "onshore periodically through the afternoon," and "storms from the Gulf" are expected to push across the area "this afternoon through the evening."
"Isolated to scattered areas of flash flooding will be possible, with the main impact being street flooding, road closures, and limited impact to structures in flood prone areas," according to the NWS Office Miami-South Florida.
An "additional 1-3 inches of rainfall" are expected across the area, with "localized higher amounts of 3-5 inches in heavier banding." Isolated
peak amounts could reach six to nine inches.
There is also a coastal flood advisory in effect through Tuesday along the east coast of South Florida.
Safety tips during a flood event
According to the Miami-Dade County, the following safety precautions should be observed during a flood event:
- Stay away from flood waters, as 6 inches of swiftly moving water can "sweep you off of your feet."
- If you come across a flooded road when driving, turn around and drive in the other direction. If caught on a flooded road with water rising quickly around you, "get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground."
- Avoiding walking or driving through floodwater, as it can be "deeper than it appears," and hide "all kinds of hazards," like "debris, sharp objects, downed power lines and even dangerous wildlife."
