Exclusive: Military bases delay cleanup of toxic forever chemicals
Americans are learning this summer that that military bases near their homes have delayed for as much as 20 years the cleanup of toxic perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl chemicals. Also known as PFAS, these "forever chemicals" pollute drinking water and increase the risk of certain cancers.
In an exclusive investigation, USA TODAY compiled records of the delays and built an interactive dashboard with maps and timelines showing where cleanup has been delayed and for how long.
