There have been weeks with more high-end college football matchups, and there will be more ahead as we move deeper into autumn. But, as we’re fond of saying, there are no truly uneventful Saturdays in this sport.
We therefore present a Week 6 slate that features a trio of ranked pairings, as well as another clash of unbeatens from a major conference. Add in a notable rivalry game and a few other notable conference clashes, and we think you’ll agree there should be enough happenings to retain the attention of the interested viewer all day Saturday.
Here’s a breakdown of the most impactful games.
No. 2 Georgia at No. 7 Alabama
Time/TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ABC.
Why watch: The week’s marquee contest is in Tuscaloosa, where the Crimson Tide want to continue their recent run of success against
the Bulldogs. The game is on for now, although Hurricane Isaias could force plans to change. Georgia has been dominant on both sides of the ball through its first five games but faces by far its toughest test to date. The offense is at its best when the ground attack works, but Bulldogs’ QB Gunner Stockton has also been extremely efficient with his passes. He does have one pick, however, and the Crimson Tide have snagged eight INTs bringing four back for TDs. Stockton will also need to avoid DL Devan Thompkins, who has three of the Tide’s 16 sacks. Alabama QB Keelon Russell has been even more prolific, with WR Ryan Coleman-Williams providing a constant deep threat. There aren’t many ground yards to be had against LB Chris Cole and the Georgia front, but the Tide will need to get RBs Daniel Hill and Trae’Shawn Brown involved to keep the airways open.
Why it could disappoint: It doesn’t seem likely, but we haven’t seen Georgia under any kind of game pressure yet. A rout either way would be a huge surprise, though wet and windy conditions could conceivably favor Georgia’s more reliable ground game.
No. 10 LSU at No. 25 Kentucky
Time/TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN.
Why watch: The Bayou Bengals have climbed back into the top 10, and they’ll hope to show they belong there. The Wildcats must also prove worthy of their ranking, as they’ve only managed to beat teams at the bottom of the SEC standings thus far. Tigers QB Sam Leavitt continues to have interception issues, though his scrambling ability has also produced six rushing scores. As such he can expect additional attention from Wildcats LB Grant Godfrey. UK will counter with QB Kenny Minchey, who prefers not to tuck it and let WR Kenny Darby and TE Willie Rodriguez Jr. collect the yardage. It will be up to LSU DB Ty Benefield to limit the gains downfield.
Why it could disappoint: There’s still mismatch potential here. The Wildcats were overwhelmed by Alabama after halftime, and the Tigers know how to protect the lead once they get it.
No. 22 UCLA at No. 13 Oregon
Time/TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS.
Why watch: The Ducks go for the sweep of the Big Ten’s Los Angeles outpost. They will be at home this time, but the Bruins might nevertheless prove an equal if not greater challenge than the Trojans. UCLA began the campaign with a road victory at California, but this hostile environment in Autzen Stadium will be a significant step up. RB Wayne Knight has provided the bulk of the scoring punch for the Bruins, but QB Nico Iamaleava will likely have to lend more air cover with Ducks LB Devon Jackson and DB Koi Perich plugging holes. With QB Dante Moore ruled out, Oregon will turn to Dylan Raiola, who was excellent in relief against Southern California. Either Moore or Raiola will be opposed by LB Sammy Omosigho, who does a little of everything for the Bruins’ defense.
Why it could disappoint: This is the rebuilt Bruins’ first encounter with one of the Big Ten’s projected contenders, so it remains to be seen if they’re able to handle the uptick in competition. Oregon, furthermore, is very hard to beat at Autzen Stadium.
No. 5 Indiana at Nebraska
Time/TV: noon ET, Fox.
Why watch: A somewhat unexpected battle of 5-0 squads gets the Big Noon treatment. The Cornhuskers are for the most part untested, although the same could be said for the Hoosiers. Nebraska QB Anthony Colandrea has been a good fit since transferring in, with the one-two punch of RBs Jamal Rule and Mekhi Nelson providing plenty of ground support. They’ll encounter resistance from Hoosiers’ LBs Isaiah Jones and Rolijah Hardy. Indiana QB Josh Hoover was happy to have RB Turbo Richard back in his backfield at Rutgers last week, although there’s little dropoff when Lee Beebe is taking handoffs. A veteran secondary led by CBs Andrew Marshall and Donovan Jones is the backbone of the Cornhuskers’ defense.
Why it could disappoint: The Cornhuskers didn’t fare so well in their last litmus test against the Hoosiers. That beatdown in 2024 was in Bloomington, so Nebraska followers are hoping for a better outcome in the friendlier environs of Lincoln.
No. 1 Texas vs. Oklahoma
Time/TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC.
Why watch: The Red River showdown in Dallas arrives with perhaps somewhat less fanfare than in past years. The Longhorns look to defend their lofty perch atop the polls, while the Sooners are in desperate need of a season-saving spark. Texas QB Arch Manning hasn’t been extraordinary this season, with the exception of a magical fourth quarter against Ohio State. He’s also been considerably more effective than Oklahoma counterpart, QB John Mateer, who has been intercepted four times and also lost two fumbles. The defenses should be the stronger units for both sides, and names to know include Sooners DL David Stone and LB Owen Heinecke and Longhorns DL Colin Simmons and DB Jelani McDonald.
Why it could disappoint: It probably will, although the Oklahoma defense might at least keep it close for a while. Unexpected things happen in rivalries, however, so we shouldn’t completely write it off.
No. 19 Houston at Kansas State
Time/TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, Fox.
Why watch: We pay a visit to Big 12 country for a clash of felines as the Cougars and Wildcats try to avoid a second league loss to stay within shouting distance of the leaders. K-State could have a rest advantage coming off an open date, but that also means the Wildcats have had extra time to stew over their narrow loss at Cincinnati. QB Avery Johnson is a dual threat who has accounted for 10 total TDs. Houston QB Conner Weigman is a more conventional passer with 11 scoring throws on the season and just one pick.
Why it could disappoint: The Cougars have more offensive weapons, but the defense hasn’t exactly been lights out. The Wildcats should be able to keep up if a track meet breaks out.
No. 18 Southern California at Penn State
Time/TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC.
Why watch: USC remains in the Big Ten hunt, barely, after escaping a last-minute upset bid from Washington. The Trojans now attempt to overcome their recent difficulties traveling east. The Nittany Lions have their own troubles as they are still seeking their first conference victory, but there should nonetheless be plenty of energy in Beaver Stadium on White Out night. Penn State QB Rocco Becht has struggled to move the chains with top WR Koby Howard sidelined. The Trojans’ defense might be somewhat more forgiving, but USC QB Jayden Maiava and RB King Miller should be just as effective on the other side.
Why it could disappoint: Notwithstanding the Trojans are suspect at stopping opponents, the Nittany Lions’ lack of punch at the line of scrimmage is concerning to say the least. A quick start from USC could eliminate the crowd advantage quickly, but as mentioned that hasn’t been easy for the Trojans outside the Pacific time zone.
