The Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars are heading in opposite directions as they prepare to square off on "Thursday Night Football" in Week 9.
But Baltimore's struggles have less to do with a lack of talent and more to do with a pair of injuries in their quarterback room. The biggest blow, of course, is the loss of two-time MVP Lamar Jackson, who has already missed three games this season and will now land on injured reserve (IR) after suffering a thumb injury that requires surgery.
Backup Tyler Huntley isn't riding to the rescue, either, after suffering a turf toe injury that will sideline him for the rest of the season.
That leaves undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano to make his first NFL start. The former Maine and UConn quarterback put together
an impressive college career, throwing for 10,926 yards and 94 touchdowns. Still, Thursday night will be quite the introduction to life in the NFL.
At 4-4, the Ravens aren't out of contention by any stretch, and they acquired veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett from the Arizona Cardinals via trade on Weds. Nov. 4. The 33-year-old will not play in today's game but he brings a respected locker room presence and should quickly assimilate in Baltimore.
The visiting Jaguars, meanwhile, look like one of the AFC's emerging contenders. Their defense has been downright stingy against the run, becoming the first team since the 1970 merger to hold every opposing rusher under 40 yards through its first five games. Jacksonville has also extended its streak of not allowing a 75-yard rusher to 23 consecutive games. That's a daunting assignment for Ravens running back Derrick Henry.
Meanwhile, Trevor Lawrence and head coach Liam Coen have the Jaguars' offense firing on all cylinders. Can Jacksonville make another statement in primetime, or will Fagnano and the Ravens stun everyone?
