Elizabeth Holmes is back in the spotlight as the convicted Theranos founder prepares for a move to a Texas halfway house and a new documentary about her life heads to theaters.
Holmes is scheduled to be transferred to the Austin Transitional Center in Del Valle, Texas, on Aug. 23, 2027, according to an update from the Department of Justice's Victim Notification System reported by ABC News. She is currently serving an 11-year, three-month federal prison sentence.
Holmes was convicted in 2022 of defrauding Theranos investors of hundreds of millions of dollars by making false claims about the company's technology, finances and business relationships. She reported to prison in 2023.
Her case has also become the subject of multiple documentaries and
a scripted television series. A new documentary from A24, comedian Nathan Fielder and filmmaker Lance Oppenheim is scheduled to hit theaters in October.
Who is Elizabeth Holmes?
Holmes founded Theranos in 2003 after dropping out of Stanford University. The company claimed it had developed technology that could perform a wide range of blood tests using only a small amount of blood.
Holmes attracted significant attention in Silicon Valley and was once hailed as the next Steve Jobs. Theranos also attracted major investors as Holmes promoted the company's blood-testing technology.
According to the Securities and Exchange Commission, Holmes and Theranos raised more than $700 million from investors between 2013 and 2015 while making it appear that the company had successfully developed a commercially ready portable blood analyzer.
Holmes was charged with fraud and ultimately convicted in 2022. A jury found her guilty of four counts related to defrauding investors.
She was sentenced to 135 months, or 11 years and three months, in federal prison.
Where is Elizabeth Holmes now?
Holmes is being held at Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas, a minimum-security federal facility. Her scheduled release date is Feb. 22, 2030, according to previous USA TODAY reporting.
But Holmes is scheduled to leave the federal prison camp before then. The Justice Department's Victim Notification System lists her for placement at the Austin Transitional Center in Del Valle, Texas, on Aug. 23, 2027.
Minimum-security federal facilities typically house nonviolent, first-time offenders or people who have moved down from higher-security facilities because of good behavior, according to a prison consultant cited in previous USA TODAY reporting.
What's the new Elizabeth Holmes documentary?
A24 announced Sept. 6 that it had secretly made "You Can See Everything," a documentary about Holmes from Fielder and Oppenheim.
The film had a surprise world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on the same day it was announced and is scheduled for release in theaters in October.
The documentary begins 34 days before Holmes goes to prison in 2023 and follows a three-year filmmaking journey. Its synopsis describes the project as an intimate portrait that develops into a broader look at Holmes and the filmmakers' experience with her.
Holmes was also the subject of the 2019 documentary "The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley."
Her story was also dramatized in Hulu's 2022 limited series "The Dropout," with Amanda Seyfried portraying Holmes.
