After a dramatic come-from-behind win over Valor Christian (CO) last week, Cherry Creek increased its winning streak to a state best 31 games.
Unfortunately for the Bruins, that number has been subtracted some as Kyle Newman of the Denver Post reported on Monday night, Sept. 21, that 5)3 Bruins had to forfeit their season-opening win over Chatfield (CO) after using an ineligible player.
Cherry Creek appealed the decision, but it was not overturned.The Bruins had won the game 28-15 after scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback.
With the loss, Cherry Creek is now 3-1 on the season and gives the Bruins their first in-state loss since the 2023 Class 5A championship game and their first in-state regular season loss since 2022.
Cherry Creek lost to Columbus (CO) in the 2023 championship game 28-14. As for their last regular season loss, that came by a score of 24-21 to Grandview (CO) on October 28. 2022.
According to the report from the Denver Post, Cherry Creek head coach Dave Logan noted that the punishment was "punitive" and "way over the top.” Logan also stated that no other team in the state will feel sorry for them and if he was on another team, he wouldn't either.
Cherry Creek has dominated Colorado's high school football landscape over the last decade, winning state championships in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025. They won their first state championship back in 1982 and have been the top program in the state over the last four decades, winning 16 state championships.
With the most recent Cherry Creek loss, Limon now owns the state's longest winning streak at 13 games.
With the decision unable to be overturned, the Bruins will look to add on to their current win streak of three games on Thursday night as they host a 3-1 Cherokee Trail (CO) side. The Cougars lost to the Bruins 49-12 the last time they met on the field.
