The United States has been historically bad at foursomes in international match play play, winning only six of 24 foursomes matches in the past two Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups.
The good news? The U.S.
gets a break from the format Saturday morning. The bad news? They'll be back at it again in the afternoon after watching the International team blitz them in a 5-0 foursomes drubbing Friday.
First, though, a chance to chip away at the 7-3 lead the Internationals built in four-ball, which will see each golfer play his own ball, with teams taking the best of the two scores on each hole. That'll change the strategy, with golfers being able to play to their individual strengths and possibly take some additional high-risk, high-reward chances when their partners are on the fairways or greens.
In theory, the four-ball format will play to the assumed talent advantage enjoyed by the Americans, who were a heavy favorite to win coming in. But the Internationals flipped that script Friday, and now are a slight favorite to win the tournament, according to BetMGM.
With first-day hero Justin Thomas paired with PGA Tour rookie Jackson Koivun, the U.S. will look to get out to a fast start before World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns take the course later in the morning.
