Moisés Caicedo will not take part in Chelsea's Carabao Cup match with Leeds on Wednesday, Sept. 9 as the midfielder continues recovering from an injury.
The Ecuador international was a surprise omission from Chelsea's opener against Fulham, with manager Xabi Alonso saying he had suffered a “minor setback."
Caicedo then missed a midweek Carabao Cup win against Luton Town, before returning against Brighton.
But Caicedo suffered another setback during the Brighton match, and was forced to miss a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, Sept. 6.
Speaking ahead of the match against Leeds, Alonso admitted that he may have rushed Caicedo back too quickly from the initial injury.
"He has a problem in his calf," Alonso said at a press conference on Tuesday, Sept.
8.
"It was the same that he had before Brighton. I wanted to have Moi [back]. Probably it was my mistake to push him too early, so that's why I'm cautious now not to make the same mistake."
Alonso did say that Caicedo was in training and he didn't expect the injury to keep him out for long.
In addition to Caicedo, Chelsea will also be missing Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha and Jordan Henderson against Leeds due to injury.
The Spaniard did express optimism that that all four players would be back soon.
"Not yet, they are still not ready to go, and it's not the moment to take an early risk," Alonso said. "So we go game by game with them, but it’s too early."
