Tri-Rail passengers will pay more for their tickets starting today, as a planned fare hike takes effect.
The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority published a press release advising riders that the Tri-Rail would increase its fares by 10% starting Oct. 1, a change that was approved by the organization's governing board in June.
The increase will apply to all one-way and round-trip tickets, according to the agenda from the June meeting, and will round all "adjusted fares to the nearest whole dollar," which means that "some fares experienced more or less than a 10% increase." Weekend fares will remain the same at $5 flat.
“Tri-Rail continues to provide an important and affordable transportation option for residents, commuters and visitors
traveling throughout the region,” Diane Hernandez Del Calvo, SFRTA Deputy Executive Director, said in the release. “This fare adjustment is just one of the components to help sustain service and support the long-term financial sustainability of the system.”
Still, discounted fares will remain available for "eligible passengers," including students and senior citizens.
