Summer vacation is drawing to a close - or is it? Some kids are already staring down homework and alarm clocks, but others are still enjoying summer camp and late bedtimes. And, like every school year, the debate has begun anew: what qualifies as an "early" or "late" return to school?
"Back-to-school time" can mean anything from July to September, depending on where you live. The first weeks of August mark a return to the classroom for many students in states like Indiana, while kids in New Jersey are still looking forward to a full month of vacation.
Theories as to why school start dates vary so widely across the United States have long since been thrown around - a holdover from a largely agrarian time, the Industrial Revolution, or weather.
In reality, it was never as simple as "let the kids work the farm" or "it's too hot in here." Rather, the short answer is "it's complicated."
When does school start? Anywhere from July to September
In general, schools in the southern region tend to have the earliest start times, whereas later start times are more common in northern schools, according to 2023 researchby Pew Research Center.
In an analysis of more than 1,500 public school districts during the 2023-2024 school year, Pew found:
- By the second week of August, nearly all public school students in the region covering Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas were back from summer break.
- Almost no districts, however, in the New England and Middle Atlantic states went back before late August.
- Three-quarters of students in the Middle Atlantic, including New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, did not return until the second week of September.
- The earliest tracked return date was July 17, while the latest was Sept. 8.
What is 'early' and what is 'late' nationwide?
Data collected by MDR Education for the 2026-2027 school year found that 84% of public school students hit the classroom before the end of August. The largest portion, 48% (42,835), returned before Aug. 16.
Only 15.7% of schools return after Aug 31.
Naturally, start times impact the end of the school year, as well. More than half, roughly 57%, of schools will be out of session by June 1, while only 12.9% stay open after June 15.
How did schools originally choose start dates?
It is a common belief that some regions started school earlier as a relic of an agrarian calendar that once centered life around the cycle of crop growth and harvest. Theoretically, the dependence on the agricultural industry that persisted in the South after the North had begun to industrialize more heavily meant that southern children were needed on the farm during the most labor-intensive times of the season. This meant they left school earlier and went back earlier.
While this theory may be rooted in some truth, it is more likely that children would be needed on the farm in the spring during planting and the fall during harvest, not in the hot summer months, experts say. Instead, school schedules were often tailored to the specific needs of the surrounding community.
"Agrarian cycles are generally cited as the reason for summer breaks, which supposedly allowed for young people to assist with responsibilities on family farms," Julie Gorlewski, senior associate dean for Academic Affairs and Teacher Education at the University at Buffalo, previously told USA TODAY. "However, prior to efforts toward standardization in the late 19th century, school calendars reflected the needs of their communities. Reformers sought to create more uniformity across urban and rural regions; and this resulted in the longer summer break that persists today."
Weather was also an element in school calendar decisions. Keeping cool during sweltering summers was challenging before the invention and widespread adoption of air conditioning, especially in large cities and urban areas. Some urban families chose to flee to the less crowded countryside in the summer, meaning kids were not around to sit in the suffocating classrooms, according to a PBS report.
Other factors that impact school start times
Today, school sessions are mostly a matter of state-level politics, with some sticking to tradition, as well.
"State political leaders determine features such as curricular requirements, teacher certification regulations, graduation requirements, and the number of school days in an academic year," Gorlewski said.
In New York, for example, the school year can begin no earlier than Sept. 1 and can extend no later than June 30. If public school districts want any state aid or funding, they must adhere to these guidelines while still fitting in the required number of school days (180 in this case). Depending on the location, administrators may also need to factor in lost days due to inclement weather and union parameters.
“Contemporary decisions around school calendars are also affected by national holidays, weather (for example, to avoid times when it is particularly costly to heat or cool a building), and collective bargaining agreements,” said Gorlewski.
In some cases, school calendars have remained the same for years, providing consistency that leaders may be hesitant to disrupt.
"It’s honestly surprising to me that the school calendar remains generally untouched. This school calendar has been in place for decades in New York," Michael Capuana, district superintendent of Erie 1 BOCES in Buffalo, New York, previously told USA TODAY. "In many ways, it seems as though the rationale boils down to 'we've always done it this way,' despite the fact that our educators and schools are serving more students, families and communities well beyond the typical boundaries of the traditional school day and year."
"In short, decisions around school calendars reflect the kind of tension between central and local governance that characterizes and sustains a democratic republic," Gorlewski said. "Conversations around public schooling have always been contested, and will continue to require dialogue that takes into consideration the needs and desires of a range of stakeholders, including taxpayers, political leaders, community members, educators, and – most importantly – students."
Parents can't decide, either
Despite how we got here or why school start times vary so much, every summer sparks debate among parents in different parts of the country.
One digital creator based in California posed the question on Facebook. "Why are these kids going back to school so early?" she wrote. "It's literally still summer."
"Why do we send our kids back to school in the beginning of August, when it’s often 95–100° outside?" asked one mom from Oklahoma. "We spend a fortune cooling school buildings, kids wait at bus stops in dangerous heat, school buses can become unbearably hot, and many students don’t even get to enjoy outdoor recess because it’s simply too hot."
A handful of other parents, of course, countered with excitement for their kids to return.
"Counting down the days until the house is finally quiet! The first day of school is basically a holiday for parents. Who else is ready for this level of peace?"joked one postwith over 1,000 likes.
The replies didn't exactly answer her question, but bubbled up a lot of back-to-school memories. Whether it's "too early" or "too late," the age-old tradition is here.
