NEW YORK — After a relatively uneventful first few days weather-wise, Mother Nature is finally having its say at the U.S. Open as rain has started to fall Tuesday at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.
The rain will not effect the matches at the two venues with retractable roofs, Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium.
The day's first match on Ashe is Madison Keys vs. Alina Korneeva, followed by Taylor Fritz taking on 18-year-old qualifier Darwin Blanch. Mirra Andreeva vs. Janice Tjen will follow Flavio Cobolli and Francisco Comesana on Armstrong.
The forecast for Sept. 1 in Queens, according to the Accuweather, is for conditions to be humid, with morning showers and scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon, with a high
temperature of 83 degrees. Those thunderstorms could bring flash flooding, hail and high winds.
The rain could put a halt on all action on the outdoor courts, including the Grandstand where No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina is scheduled to take on Thea Frodin.
The conditions at night are more of the same with a high chance of a showers and thunderstorms.
The stadium schedule for Tuesday night, includes Coco Gauff on Ashe against Zeynep Sonmez, and men's top seed Alexander Zverev playing Lorenzo Sonego. The Armstrong night matches lead off with Gael Monfils, making his final appearance at the U.S. Open against Adolfo Daniel Vallego and Alexander Eala taking on qualifier Mary Stoiana.
