The upcoming Freedom 250 Grand Prix will have a major impact on roads in Washington DC, and now the race's effects will be felt in the sky.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration announced Monday there would be a ground stop at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport during the Aug. 23 event.
The announcement comes after the Metropolitan Police Department issued an advisory detailing dozens of road closures and parking restrictions tied to the race, the first of its kind on the streets of Washington DC.
Here's what to know about how the race could affect getting around the nation's capital.
DCA to pause flights for Grand Prix
The FAA said Monday it would be temporarily pausing flight operations at DCA from 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Aug. 23.
The closure coincides with the beginning
of the race, which is expected to start just after 1 p.m.
Travelers are advised to check with their airline for the latest flight status.
The Washington Post reported there are 63 fewer flights departing DCA Aug. 23 compared to the previous Sunday.
