Commuters between West Philadelphia and Center City are urged to take detoured routes as the Market Street Bridge is now closed for over a year.
According to PennDOT, the closure anticipated to last 14 months as structural improvements are made to the bridge, which spans Market Street from Schuylkill Ave West to 23rd Street.
The closure is one facet of a $148.9 million bridge rehabilitation project.
The superstructure on the Market Street Bridge over Amtrak and the Schuylkill Expressway is supposed to be partially demolished and then replaced, and replacements will be made to the sidewalk and decks adjacent to the bridge.
Where is the Market Street Bridge detoured to?
The main detours for the Market Street Bridge closure are the parallel Walnut and Chestnut Street routes.
Those going East toward
Center City should detour via Chestnut Street.
Those going West toward University City should detour via Walnut Street.
Additional detour routes for trucks as well as pedestrians and bikers trying to reach the Schuylkill River Trail are posted to the PennDOT website.
