One of Downtown Pittsburgh's most recognizable pedestrian corridors has a new look.
The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and the University of Pittsburgh's Hemispheric Conversations: Urban Art Project recently unveiled the fourth edition of the Strawberry Way mural, continuing a tradition that has transformed the alleyway into a vibrant public art destination over the past decade.
The latest installation brought together three internationally recognized street artists, Ish Muhammad, Gloria "Gloe" Talamantes and Tomás Ives, who spent 10 days in Pittsburgh collaborating with local artists to create four interconnected pieces spanning several blocks of Strawberry Way.
The project marks nearly 10 years since the first artistic activation of the corridor.
Since then, Strawberry Way has become known as a colorful urban canvas that evolves alongside Downtown Pittsburgh itself.
"It's approaching 10 years since the PDP's first art project debuted on Strawberry Way, and the space truly reflects Pittsburgh itself and how it's constantly evolving," Bruce Chan, senior director of urban design for the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, said in a statement.
The artwork was spearheaded by collaboration
Artists worked alongside local creators including Ifeoma Creates, Emily Paige Armstrong, Cara Rosetti, Qian Dubay, Brian Gonella, Haley Wilson and Ada Siobhan. Community members also had the opportunity to help shape the project during public Paint Jam events held in September.
Organizers say the installation is about more than beautifying a city block. The collaboration was designed to connect international and local artists while creating public spaces that encourage community engagement and cultural exchange.
The effort was led in partnership with Hemispheric Conversations: Urban Art Project, a University of Pittsburgh initiative that supports urban art through artist residencies, education and community involvement.
The mural was officially unveiled Oct. 20 during a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O'Connor. Downtown leaders hope the new artwork will continue attracting visitors to Strawberry Way while showcasing Pittsburgh's growing public art scene for years to come.
