The Detroit Lions will debut their new alternate uniforms in Week 8, though you might need to be something of an NFL fashion aficionado to notice.
The Lions will wear their Nike "Rivalries" kits − aka their "Defend the Den" uniforms − for the first time in Sunday's critical NFC North matchup with the undefeated Minnesota Vikings (6-0), a game Detroit (4-2) very likely needs to win if it's going to stay in the race for this season's division title. Given the game will take place in Motown at Ford Field, not to mention how the Lions are promoting their new look, they should probably win.
"Detroit was once defined by what it built. Now, it’s defined by what it overcame; by its complete refusal to surrender," the team stated when revealing its alternate
unis in August. "That mentality is reflected by its people and its football team, in the way they guard the places they call home.
"Every opponent is an intruder."
Beware to the Viking horde. Otherwise, here's what to know about the Lions' duds:
What's new about the Lions' 'Rivalries' uniforms?
If you're only catching highlights from Sunday's Lions-Vikings game, a quick glance might suggest Detroit is wearing its alternate Honolulu Blue helmets atop its road uniforms. But the Defend the Dens aren't the brilliant white the Lions normally feature away from Michigan, more the slightest shade of gray.
And while the helmets might look almost exactly like the ones they used in last week's last-second win over the Green Bay Packers, the lion logo and centerline stripes will feature a carbon-fiber detailing which "symbolizes elite performance and connects to Detroit’s car and racing culture" − and will also extend to the italicized jersey numbers. The shoulders and pants will have jagged black-and-Honolulu Blue striping elements, "Detroit" is inscribed above the numbers, and "Defend the Den" is stitched inside the collar.

What are NFL 'Rivalries' uniforms by Nike?
Think of them as the football version of the sports apparel company’s NBA "City Edition" uniforms or Major League Baseball’s "City Connect" jerseys. Nike has strived to create something that further strengthens NFL teams’ bonds to their unique civic environments. And, as “rivalries” would suggest, all of them will be worn in intra-divisional matchups.
“Rivalries uniforms will celebrate storied local traditions and unite fan communities with designs unique to select cities and teams,” Nike announced during the program’s launch in 2025.
"The designs are rooted extensively in the legacies and inspirations true to each team, serving as authentic, competitive expressions of community pride while giving athletes and fans an opportunity to connect like never before."
Which NFL teams have 'Rivalries' uniforms?
Eventually all of them will. This year, AFC South and NFC North squads are joining the AFC East and NFC West teams that kicked off the initiative last year. Every team that has a “Rivalries” uni is scheduled to wear it once this season. The other four divisions will be added to the rotation over the next two seasons, and the “Rivalries” option then becomes part of a team’s closet for the following three years.
