Reliability is a huge factor to consider if you want to get the most value possible out of a new car purchase. Dependable cars can last upward of 250,000 miles, potentially translating to more than a decade of ownership.
Some car models are significantly more reliable than others thanks to their build quality and materials. Here's a ranking list of the most reliable cars based on research and my test-driving experiences.
3. Mazda3 Hatchback
Mazda's sporty hatchback isn't just affordable and stylish; it's also dependable. The Mazda3 Hatchback is one of the most reliable new cars for the money in 2026, according to a study from automotive research site iSeeCars.com. It has an estimated lifespan of 13.8 years.
Starting MSRP: $25,650
Horsepower/torque: 186 horsepower/186
pound-feet of torque
MPG: 26 city, 35 highway, 29 combined
Why I recommend it: Mazda's build quality has improved greatly in recent years. The Japanese car brand builds affordable, luxury-adjacent models that compete in mainstream segments.
The Mazda3's design appeals to driving enthusiasts with its precise steering and an available manual transmission. The Mazda3 Hatchback is best for solo commuters and buyers who want a budget sporty hatch with a refined interior.
2. Toyota Corolla
Toyota's small sedan regularly battles with the Honda Civic for the top sales position in its segment.
It isn't the sportiest option or the most fun to drive, but the Corolla delivers rock-solid reliability over long periods of ownership. It has an expected lifespan of 11.3 years, according to iSeeCars.com, and can last longer with proper maintenance.

Starting MSRP: $23,125
Horsepower/torque: 169 horsepower/151 pound-feet of torque
MPG: 32 city, 41 highway, 35 combined
Why I recommend it: My mother owns a 2004 Toyota Corolla, and it's still on the road over two decades after it rolled off the dealer's lot. The Corolla is a longevity legend, and its cabin quality has improved with time.
It has also remained one of the cheapest options for small car buyers, making it an excellent pick for commuters or small families on a budget. When it comes to affordability, practicality, and longevity, the Corolla is easily one of the most well-balanced new cars on the market.
1. Honda Civic
Like the Corolla, the Honda Civic is a staple in both the hatchback and small car segments. Honda also added a hybrid version of the popular small car for buyers who seek better fuel economy.
The Civic has an expected lifespan of 13.5 years and is the only car on iSeeCars.com's list with a lower annual ownership cost than the Corolla ($2,058 per year).

Starting MSRP: $24,995
Horsepower/torque: 150 horsepower/133 pound-feet of torque
MPG: 32 city, 41 highway, 36 combined
Why I recommend it: Honda Civic parts are easy to find and relatively inexpensive. The small sedan has an extremely low cost of ownership and offers fun, sporty driving dynamics.
The Civic has strong resale value and is relatively affordable compared to the average new vehicle price (nearly $50,000). If you want a more premium sedan option than the Corolla with more driving verve, the Civic checks plenty of boxes.
