Two women’s basketball stars will not be playing in Unrivaled this season, the professional 3-on-3 women’s basketball league.
Unrivaled announced a handful of roster updates on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Among them, WNBA All-Star Aliyah Boston will not play in the league this season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on her right meniscus
. The Indiana Fever forward is expected to return to Unrivaled in 2028 as part of a multi-year deal. And Unrivaled President of Basketball Clare Duwelius said in a statement that the league had mutually terminated its contract with former Iowa standout Kate Martin.
“I’m incredibly grateful to Unrivaled for the opportunity to be part of its first two seasons,” Martin said in a statement. “It’s been special to help
launch a league that continues to elevate women’s basketball. While I’m excited about what’s on the horizon for me, I’m so thankful for the people, the competition, and the memories I’ve made in Unrivaled.”
To fill the vacant roster spots left open by Boston and Martin, Unrivaled has signed Isabelle Harrison and Kaitlyn Chen to one-year deals. Chen, who won a national championship at UConn, is currently playing in the WNBA Finals with the Golden State Valkyries. Harrison averaged career highs of 12.8 points and 6.9 rebounds per game this WNBA season playing with the Toronto Tempo.
For Boston, the injury she finally had surgically repaired on her right knee has lingered for a while. It originally occurred while she was playing in Unrivaled last February, forcing her to miss the league’s postseason and the qualifying tournament for the FIBA World Cup in Puerto Rico. She played through the injury with the Fever this season and joined Team USA in Berlin for the World Cup. Boston made her fourth WNBA All-Star team while averaging 16.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game for Indiana.
Martin’s WNBA season was full of twists and turns. Ultimately, she was unable to find a consistent role with a team this season. She was waived by the Valkyries on May 7, joined the Los Angeles Sparks for 17 games before being waived in August, then signed a developmental contract with the Chicago Sky and appeared in two games with the club. She averaged 2.6 points in 7.7 minutes per game this season.
In 13 Unrivaled games with the Breeze last season, Martin averaged 6.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.
The 2027 Unrivaled season begins on Jan. 8 at TD Garden in Boston.
