The Los Angeles Rams were trailing 20-10 late in the third quarter when Sean McVay gathered his entire offense in a huddle on the sideline.
McVay was seen delivering an animated speech to his offense, a moment that was captured by Fox's broadcast. It appeared the 40-year-old's message landed with the unit.
After going four-and-out and turning the ball over on downs during their first drive of the fourth quarter, Los Angeles' offense sprang to life. The team orchestrated back-to-back 10-play touchdown drives of 98 and 79 yards to take its first lead of the game with 1:10 remaining in regulation.
McVay was asked during his postgame news conference what he had said to spark his team's offensive outburst.
"I don't remember exactly," McVay candidly admitted
to reporters.
However, he was able to relay the gist of what he communicated to his offense.
"It was just more of what is on my heart to just say, 'Guys, we're capable. You gotta believe. And we gotta just string good plays together. Our defense is doing everything that they can to keep us in this game,'" McVay said. "And I believed in that group. I believed in our ability to consistently execute on some things that we didn't and probably something along those lines."
McVay's faith in his offense was rewarded. Reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford bounced back from a rocky start to help guide the Rams on their two, late touchdown drives with a steady hand.
Meanwhile, running back Kyren Williams was able to power in both scores. McVay particularly credited him with the effort he showed on his 7-yard touchdown reception, where he powered through a tackler and managed to extend into the end zone, while deflecting all credit for the Rams' comeback to his players.
"They were the ones that brought it to life," McVay said. "They're the ones that deserve all the credit."
