A prominent 4-star high school football prospect who was committed to West Virginia was fatally shot early Monday morning, Oct. 5, in Muncie, Indiana.
Christopher Wilson Jr., a 17-year-old Yorktown High School standout, was found dead inside a vehicle in the 1400 Block of East Cromer Avenue, according to Muncie police Deputy Chief Melissa Criswell. The news was first reported by The Star Press
, part of the USA TODAY Network.Delaware County emergency dispatchers received a report of a shooting at 2:59 a.m. Monday, Criswell said. Wilson had been shot multiple times.
Wilson was considered the highest-rated football recruit in East Central Indiana. He had committed to West Virginia in June and was expected to continue his football career with the Mountaineers,
picking them over Auburn, Cincinnati, and Purdue. He had 12 tackles (2 for loss), a sack, and 4 quarterback hurries in five games played with the Tigers this season.
According to The Star Press, Yorktown High School principal Stacey Brewer acknowledged Wilson's death in a message sent to Yorktown students and parents on Monday morning.
"With great sadness, I share that Chris Wilson, a senior at Yorktown High School, died tragically early this morning. His family has given us permission to share this news," Brewer wrote. "Chris was a valued member of our school, our football team, and our community. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and teammates. Muncie Police are leading the investigation, and Yorktown Police have confirmed there is no threat to our students or schools. Your student may hear this news over break. Please check in with them, listen, and let us know if they need support. Our counselors will be available when school resumes. If your student needs immediate help, call or text 988. Please keep Chris's family in your hearts."
Police had not publicly identified a suspect or announced a motive as of Monday.
