A southern Indiana farm known for its elaborate celebrity-themed corn mazes is drawing both praise and criticism after unveiling a 2026 design honoring slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, reigniting debate over the polarizing political figure nearly a year after his death.
Goebel Farms, near Evansville, revealed the maze Sept. 2 and said the tribute is intended to promote a simple message: political disagreements should never lead to violence. But the design quickly sparked backlash and support online, with some applauding the farm's call for civil discourse and others questioning why Kirk was chosen as the face of one of the attraction's biggest annual draws.
"We hoped the maze might encourage people to reflect on the importance of continuing
to talk with one another, even when disagreements are serious," Goebel told the Evansville Courier & Press, part of the USA TODAY Network.
Why did the farm choose Charlie Kirk?
Goebel Farms said it selected Kirk because he "believed that disagreement should lead to conversation, not violence."
In a statement, the farm said Kirk spent much of his career engaging political opponents through public debates and encouraging young people to participate in civic discussions. While acknowledging that many people disagreed with his views and tactics, the business said it wanted to recognize the principle that political differences should never lead to violence.
Goebel later emphasized that the maze was not meant to endorse everything Kirk said or did, nor dismiss concerns from people offended by some of his remarks.
The farm has previously featured public figures including Carrie Fisher, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in its annual maze designs.
Social media reaction quickly split
Not everyone embraced the choice.
According to the Courier & Press, the Facebook announcement generated about 1,000 reactions and more than 200 shares within four hours. Roughly 450 users reacted with likes or hearts, while about 480 responded with laughing emojis, underscoring the divided response.
Supporters praised the tribute and its message against political violence. Critics questioned why Kirk was chosen for one of the farm's signature attractions, with some suggesting less controversial public figures would have been better options.
The farm later issued a second statement reiterating thatpeople are free to challenge and reject ideas, but violence "must never become the response to speech."
Goebel acknowledged that some visitors may decide not to attend because of this year's theme, saying the farm respects those decisions and continues to listen to community feedback.
Who was Charlie Kirk?
Kirk founded Turning Point USA and became one of the most recognizable conservative activists in the country through campus tours, political commentary and public debates that often attracted both supporters and protesters.
The 31-year-old was fatally shot Sept. 10, 2025, while speaking at Utah Valley University during one of his "Prove Me Wrong" events.
Earlier this week, a Utah judge ruled there is enough evidence for Tyler Robinson, 23, to stand trial on murder and other charges in connection with the shooting. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty if Robinson is convicted.
As debate over the maze continues, Goebel Farms says its goal remains the same: encouraging conversation, even among people who strongly disagree.
