During Zohran Mamdani's campaign run, the mayor made major promises on what he'd accomplish in office, including universal childcare, fast and free buses and city-owned grocery stores that would charge less for food.
But what's happening with city-owned grocery stores, and when can New Yorkers expect to see them open?
Here's what we know so far.
City-owned grocery store plan by Mamdani
Before being elected as mayor, Mamdani proposed an initiative that would open multiple grocers across the city in an effort to combat rising food prices.
Five municipal grocery stores — one in each of the city's boroughs — were a part of the proposal.
According to the city's plan, groceries are expected to be offered at a 30% discount on average.
When are Mamdani's city-owned grocery stores opening in NYC?
In May, the mayor announced where it will have its Bronx location:
The Peninsula in Hunts Point. The 15,000-square-foot store is expected to be the first one to open.
According to the plan, the target opening for The Bronx location is late 2027.
A month earlier, in April, it was revealed that the city grocery store's Manhattan location would be La Marqueta in East Harlem. The 9,000-square-foot location is expected to open sometime in 2029, documents say.
Now, the city is looking for where it will place the next three sites in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.
A portal has been opened for New Yorkers to submit possible locations, and the city says that the spots must "be fully available to support a development timeline enabling grocery store delivery by December 31, 2029."
