Famed Chicago Bears coach and Hall of Famer Mike Ditka has died at 86, his family announced on Friday, Oct. 9.
Selected fifth overall by the Bears in the 1961 NFL Draft, Ditka earned Rookie of the Year honors as the first tight end in league history to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. During his 12-year professional career, he played on the Bears’ 1963 NFL championship team and the Dallas Cowboys’ Super Bowl VI championship team. In recognition of his outstanding career, Ditka became the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988.
In 1982, he returned to Chicago as head coach and led the Bears for 11 seasons. Under his leadership, the Bears reached the playoffs seven times and captured the franchise’s
only Super Bowl title in 1985.
"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Mike Ditka," his family said in a statement. "While the world knew Mike as a Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears' Super Bowl XX championship team, we knew him as the heart of our family. Mike will be missed beyond measure and remembered forever.”
