Taylor Swift lost her bid for a second Emmy on Sept. 5.
"Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour | The Final Show" went into the 78th Emmy Awards with five nominations and walked away without a trophy. The Disney+ special captured the final Eras Tour performance in Vancouver on Dec. 8, 2024.
The concert film was nominated for five awards: outstanding variety special (pre-recorded), outstanding directing for a variety special, outstanding picture editing for variety programming, outstanding sound mixing for a variety series or special and outstanding technical direction and camerawork for a special.
Swift was personally nominated as a producer and performer in the variety special category. The other four nominations recognized members of the production team.
"The Muppet Show" won outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) and outstanding picture editing for variety programming.
"The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Starring Bad Bunny" won outstanding sound mixing for a variety series or special and outstanding technical direction and camerawork for a special.
The Bad Bunny halftime show also won outstanding directing for a variety special. Hamish Hamilton won for directing the performance, beating Glenn Weiss of "The Final Show."
Two Emmy nights
The results came more than a week before the televised Emmy ceremony on Sept. 14.
The Television Academy is presenting the 78th Emmy Awards across three nights at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Awards are being handed out Sept. 5 and Sept. 6 before the final ceremony airs Sept. 14 on NBC and Peacock.
All five categories in which "The Eras Tour | The Final Show" was nominated were announced Sept. 5.
The distinction matters because Sept. 14 is also the Kansas City Chiefs' home opener, when Swift's husband, Travis Kelce, and the Chiefs face the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium.
Swift's Emmy history
The singer-songwriter has won an Emmy before. In 2015, she earned her first nomination and win for outstanding creative achievement in interactive media for the "AMEX Unstaged: Taylor Swift Experience."
The interactive experience accompanied her "Blank Space" music video and allowed fans to explore the video's New York mansion through a 360-degree camera, moving through rooms and discovering additional characters and hidden details. The project was directed by Joseph Kahn and released through the American Express Unstaged series in 2014.
