Kimi Antonelli will have to wait a bit longer to win his first Formula 1 championship.
The Mercedes driver, 20, finished first at the United States Grand Prix in Austin on Sunday, Oct. 25 after starting the competition from pole position. He needed to cross the checkered flag at the Circuit of the Americas first and also have Lewis Hamilton finish fifth or lower and George Russell finish ninth or lower. Hamilton finished fourth and Russell landed in eighth.
If Antonelli captures the title later this season, he will pass Sebastian Vettel, who won his first championship in 2010 at the age of 23, to hold the record for youngest Formula 1 drivers' champion. Antonelli previously set records as the youngest driver to lead the championship, to start
a race on pole position and to win the esteemed Monaco Grand Prix.
There are five more races left in the Formula 1 season. Antonelli's next chance to win the championship will be next weekend at the Mexican Grand Prix in Mexico City. The third and final race in the United States is the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which will be held Nov. 19-21.
