Week 2 of the college football season is in the books and – for those who missed it – it was a doozy.
Three teams in the top 10 of the US LBM Coaches Poll, No. 1 Ohio State, No. 6 Oregon
and No. 10 Oklahoma, all fell in fantastic fashion on Saturday, Sept. 12. The Buckeyes, which had the "best" loss of all three against No. 3 Texas, still suffered the indignity of giving up a 23-3 fourth-quarter lead to Arch Manning and the Longhorns in a 24-23 defeat.Indeed, it is the first time in Ryan Day's career that his Buckeyes have lost after he held onto a 20-point lead. While his team likely won't see a precipitous drop in the top 25 rankings, it's
still a heartbreaking – and disastrous – end to Ohio State's hopes of an undefeated record.
Then there's Oregon, which was shocked, 39-31, against an Oklahoma State team that last week was bullied in a loss to in-state Tulsa. The Ducks had no answer for North Texas quarterback transfer Drew Mestemaker, who completed 26-of-43 passes (60.5%) for 317 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. He also rushed six times for 109 yards and another score.
It wasn't all bad for the Big Ten, however: A week after surviving a controversial debacle of a finish vs. Western Michigan, Kyle Whittingham's 24th-ranked Wolverines beat No. 10 Oklahoma, 17-10. The defense powered the way to the victory, forcing two turnovers and limiting John Mateer's effectiveness. His counterpart, Bryce Underwood, completed 9-of-17 passes for 111 yards, but also rushed 18 times for 87 more yards and a score.
Those games and more told the story of the Week 2 college football schedule. Here's a look at the scores:
