A few years ago, if you'd told someone you bought tickets to go and see "Banana Ball," you might have been met with a weird look.
Is it like baseball? Why are people dancing? Did the outfielder catch a ball while doing a flip? Is that Broadway star Derek Klena?
The Savannah Bananas and the league of entertainment-driven, costume-wearing athletes have taken the world of sports by storm, turning America's pastime into something innovative and experimental.
Banana Ball now includes six teams across the United States playing baseball in a new way, from players on stilts and doing TikTok dances to trick plays and audience participation.
After getting their start right here in Georgia, the Savannah Bananas have sold out some of the country's biggest stadiums
— and now they are taking the game global.
Savannah Bananas go international
For the first time, the Banana Ball league will be playing in Mexico and Canada during the 2027 season, the league announced last week.
Teams will play in 74 cities during the season, including Monterrey and Tijuana, Mexico and Toronto and Winnipeg, Canada.
The Mexico games will kick off the season in February. The teams will travel to Canada in August in the middle of their regular season.
Bananas release documentary at Truist Park in Atlanta
Earlier this month, Banana Ball announced a new documentary coming to Disney+ and Hulu, documenting the 10-year journey from a project meant to help a struggling baseball program to the global phenomenon Banana Ball is today.
The documentary is scheduled for release in fall 2027, but a world premiere screening will be held at Truist Park in Atlanta on June 12, 2027.
Tickets for the event have not yet been released.
When is the next Savannah Bananas game in Atlanta?
The Savannah Bananas will be completing a three-day stint at Truist Park at the time the documentary is released.
The Bananas will play two games, one on June 10 and another on June 11, inside the baseball park against the Loco Beach Coconuts, another team in the Banana Ball league.
