Let's get this out of the way: Longtime friends, "True Detective" co-stars and Hollywood muckity-mucks Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson found out a decade or so ago that they might be half-brothers. In 2023, they revealed it to the public, and now, in 2026, they have turned that crazy family secret/scandal into a TV show about ... themselves.
Yes, Apple TV's "Brothers"(streaming Wednesdays, ★★ out of four) is a show about two old friends who find out they might be half brothers, named Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. The Oscar winner and three-time Oscar nominee, respectively, play somewhat heightened (one can only imagine) versions of themselves going through the existential crisis of learning their family
may not be what it seems. And every so often, an Uber passenger asks, "Are you really Matthew McConaughey?"
It's a wild and deeply navel-gazing concept from two wild and navel-gazing stars (just look at their recent cringey and overlong Emmy appearance). It dances along the line between "huh, how funny and weird!" and "who cares if these two rich guys I don't know are secretly related?"
And it's not like they are giving away answers to the ultimate question: Publicly McConaughey and Harrelson have not said definitively if they will take DNA tests to find out the truth of their respective lineages.
So what "Brothers" ends up as is one part celebrity gossip parody, one part buddy comedy and one part vanity project. Your feelings about the series will be entirely wrapped up in your enjoyment (and/or tolerance) of the pair's schtick: Expect McConaughey to play the good 'ole Texas boy and Harrelson to be the zany hippie smoking a joint, episode after episode. They have a loving, if at times hating and violent, relationship, and play off each other as uptight and free-wheeling foils.
Don't expect, however, this to be celebrity reality TV or any kind of tell-all. McConaughey, 56, and Harrelson, 65, have perfectly crafted these images of themselves and their families (actresses Natalie Martinez and Brittany Ishibashi are in a kind of uncanny valley as doppelgängers of the men's real-life wives Camila Alves McConaughey and Laura Louie).
Both are great fathers (even if Harrelson is slightly clueless about his daughters), both are loving husbands and both are all around good guys with great intentions and a penchant for glitzy high jinks. The subject matter may be about something as deep as family history and identity, but the pool the show is splashing around in is shallow enough for a newborn puppy to play in.
Everything about the show is so artificial, which is both the point of the series and its greatest flaw. Holland Taylor plays "Ma Mac," McConaughey's mother who reveals that she "knew" Harrelson's father back around the time young Matthew was conceived. Taylor plays such a specific and tropey character as a hard-drinking, hard-tanning old Texas dame that it's hard to imagine she has anything to do with McConaughey's real mom.
In the story, McConaughey runs for governor of Texas (with a platform that boils down to, let's all have a good time), Harrelson is consumed with finding the truth of his buddy's parentage and everyone acts like a cartoon character. It's going for the kind of low-stakes slapstick humor that many streaming comedies aim for these days. Those shows are often lightweight and unmemorable for their phoned-in jokes, and piled on top of all the other problems, "Brothers" feels feather-light.
There are a couple of moments in the show that have genuine interest − Harrelson and McConaughey are as great onscreen together as they were all the way back in "Detective" in 2014, and some of the physical comedy might get a guffaw, like when McConaughey attempts bull-riding in the premiere episode. For those who love the stars, it will certainly give the same kind of enjoyment that you might get from watching an influencer's perfectly-curated feed.
But if you were hoping a family drama so tasty and layered might get these two genuinely creative and talented performers and filmmakers to create something thoughtful and real, you have signed up for the wrong streaming service.
"Brothers" is as shiny and synthetic as your latest iPhone.
