A popular jarred vegetable brand has recalled some of its products after a social media video appeared to show a dead mouse inside a jar of its peppers.
Mezzetta Inc. initiated a voluntary recall on certain jars of peperoncinis for possible “pest contamination” on Sept. 26, according to a notice from the Food and Drug Administration and the brand.
The company acknowledged the social media post in its announcement, saying it was aware that it appeared to show “potential pest contaminant.”
“We have contacted the consumer and have moved quickly to investigate the situation and initiate a voluntary recall,” it said. “We have requested to retrieve and examine the product involved in the original consumer report and are reviewing the relevant production,
sanitation and food-safety records as part of our ongoing investigation.”
TikTok videos appeared to show dead mouse in jar
A video, posted Sept. 16, show a TikTok user warning watchers not to buy the brand because “I have a dead mouse in mine.” In the clip, the user shows a 32-ounce jar of Mezzetta peperoncinis that appears to have the body of a whole, small rodent floating inside.
Mezzetta has not received any reports of illness or injury related to this recall.
Which products were recalled?
Only one lot of Mezzetta peppers was recalled, per the company. No other Mezzetta products are affected.

What to do with recalled peppers
Anyone with the recalled peppers should not consume them and should contact the company at CustomerSupport@Mezzetta.com for further assistance.
Mezzetta has contacted distributors and sellers to get the products removed from shelves. The company will update the FDA recall page if the recall expands.
