Central Michigan men's basketball coach Andy Bronkema is on leave, but the university did not provide a reason why.
Central Michigan announced the decision on Thursday, Nov. 5, with athletic director Amy Folan naming assistant Raymoan McAfee the interim coach of the Chippewas.
It was not revealed if Bronkema personally is taking a leave or if the university placed him on leave. Central Michigan declined to provide more information to USA TODAY Sports.
The timing of the move is surprising as it comes three days after Central Michigan opened the 2026-27 season, defeating Louisiana-Monroe 83-78 on the road. Bronkema served in his role for the season opener.
Bronkema is in his second season in charge of the Chippewas after his team went 10-21 last season with
a 6-12 mark in the MAC. He arrived after spending 12 seasons at Division II Ferris State, where his team captured the program's first title in 2018.
McAfee arrived at Central Michigan alongside Bronkema and was elevated to associate head coach prior to this season. He played at Ferris State under Bronkema from 2012-14 before joining the staff and eventually joined Wayne State as an assistant.
"Since joining our program in April 2025, Coach McAfee has built strong relationships with our student-athletes and brings deep experience developing student-athletes and preparing champions and I have full confidence that our team is in good hands under his leadership," Folan said in a statement. "I am also confident that our incredibly passionate CMU Chippewa fans will continue to support the young men in our program."
Central Michigan's next game is against Division III Alma Scots in the home opener on Friday, Nov. 5.
