Serena Williams will reunite on the tennis court with sister, Venus, to play doubles in the Cincinnati Open this month, a possible hint that Serena will enter the U.S. Open later in August.
Williams, 44, ended a four-year retirement and made her comeback to professional tennis in June at the HSBC Championships in London, winning a doubles match partnered with Victoria Mboko. Williams then entered Wimbledon as a singles wild card and lost in the first round. She was supposed to play doubles at Wimbledon with her sister, but was forced to withdraw due to a knee injury that cast doubt over her status for the U.S. Open.
Williams still has not said whether or not she plans to play in this year's U.S. Open, where she has won six career singles titles.
But Cincinnati is considered a premier warmup hard court tournament for the tennis calendar's final Grand Slam, which runs Aug. 23 to Sept. 13 in New York.
The Williams sisters were awarded a doubles wild card for the Cincinnati Open, which starts Aug. 11 and concludes Aug. 23. Their last doubles match together was at the 2022 U.S. Open, and this will be their first time teaming up at the Cincinnati Open. Venus Williams, 46, was also given a singles wild card for Cincinnati.
