Apopular Japanese supermarket from New York City is expanding, bringing imported store favorites like daifuku, onigiri and live tuna cutting to the West Coast.
And soon, more locations will open across the United States.
Hashi Market opened in Cupertino, California, on Friday with a line out the door. The supermarket is known for imported snacks and Asian seasonings, as well as a department store with Japanese and Korean skincare and collectables like laububus. It also has sashimi-grade seafood, with chefs cutting fresh tuna right in front of you.
The supermarket originally opened in New York City and expanded with six locations. Now, it's planning to open more across the country.

Hashi Market hasn't disclosed an opening date for locations coming soon. The supermarket said the California locations are the stores under renovation, but there isn't a date for opening those locations either.
This store is more than a novelty. For Will Widjaja, a Sunnyvale resident who MCed the event and goes by @there.is.will on Instagram, it stocks ingredients he uses.
"I love eating good food and cooking on my own, so I'm always hunting for the best eats in the Bay," Will said. "Hashi Market is exactly what I was looking for. It has the ingredients I use at home, from full aisles of Japanese seasonings to the red bean paste I'd actually buy, plus a stellar selection of fresh sushi and ready-made food to take home. You could feel on opening day how much the community wanted a place like this close to home."
It's not just about the supermarket. Swaha Bhattacharya, a Bay Area resident and Yelp Elite, said that for her, it's a way to experience Japanese culture.
"What I love about places like this is that they make exploring new cultures feel approachable and exciting," said Bhattacharya. "Food has an incredible way of bringing people together and sparking curiosity, and having a Japanese-focused market like this nearby is a wonderful addition to our local food scene."
