BMW has recalled more than 300,000 vehicles because the engine starter may overheat and catch on fire.
BMW of North America issued a recent recall for 318,495 vehicles manufactured between 2020 and 2025 because the engine starters may overheat, catching fire due to wear on an internal component, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall report.
As of July 8, BMW had not received any reports related to accidents or injuries because of the issue, according to the report. BMW anticipates that less than 1% of the outlined vehicles were impacted by the recall.
At the same time as this recall, BMW issued a recall for more than 29,000 vehicles, also impacted by a faulty engine starter. These vehicles were produced from
2015 to 2020.

- 2021-2023 BMW 5 Series (11,991 impacted)
- 2022-2026 BMW Z4 (2,177 impacted)
- 2023-2024 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe (9,552 impacted)
- 2023-2024 BMW 4 Series Convertible (8,048 impacted)
- 2023-2024 BMW 4 Series Coupe (5,270 impacted)
- 2023-2024 BMW 3 Series (32,094 impacted)
- 2021-2025 BMW X4 (26,899 impacted)
- 2021-2024 BMW X3 (210,748 impacted)
What to do if your BMW vehicle is recalled
Dealerships will replace the engine starter for free, if necessary, according to the recall report.
Owners with questions or concerns may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) affected by the recall will be searchable on the NHTSA website beginning Aug. 28.
