Gainesville (FL) High School is facing yet another tragedy as assistant coach Quintavis Styles died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Sept. 29, after losing consciousness in the school's administration office.
The 31-year-old's death, as first reported by Noah Ram of The Gainesville Sun, a part of the USA TODAY Network, has yet to be determined.
Styles, a Colorado native, joined the Gainesville coaching staff ahead of the 2026-27 season, following first-year head coach Ashour Peera.
“Coach Styles only joined us three months ago, but I feel incredibly bad for our kids to have to go through this again,” GHS athletic director Phillip Knight told the Sun on Wednesday. “We are giving them some time off this week before resetting next week.”
The tragedy is just
one of many events that have occurred within the program throughout the past six months.
In April, junior varsity coach Rick Rone died suddenly, just one day before the start of spring practice. In August, senior kicker Sebastian Jimenez was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and sent to detention in Dilley, Texas, before returning back to Florida in early September. Then, on Sept. 18, first-year head coach Peera was placed on administrative leave.
The Hurricanes have a bye week built into their schedule this week, but are set to return to the field on Oct. 9 against Lake Weir.
