Gas prices are rising again. Here's where drivers are paying the most

Gas prices have been on the rise since the United States and Israel launched joint military strikes against Iran, leaving many drivers wondering when they will be able to get some relief at the pump.

The average price of a gallon of regular gas in the U.S.

 on Wednesday, Sept. 9 was $4.22, according to AAA. That's up from an average of $4.15 one week ago on Sept. 2 and $3.19 on Sept. 9, 2025, the group said.

Patrick De Haan, Head of Petroleum Analysis at GasBuddy, said in post on X "you can watch in real-time the national average price of gasoline continue to tick up... $4.234/gal right now."

De Haan said diesel gas prices in the U.S. are also on the rise.

"BREAKING: diesel history is about to be made. $6/gal nationally — never seen before, days away," he wrote. "It's now in the pipeline, unavoidable."

With that in mind, the USA TODAY Cars took at look at the states where drivers are paying the most at the pump right now, according to AAA.

1. California

Average Sept. 9 gas price: $5.87

Average Sept. 2 gas price: $5.73

Difference: 14 cents

2. Washington

Average Sept. 9 gas price: $5.53

Average Sept. 2 gas price: $5.44

Difference: 9 cents

3. Hawaii

Average Sept. 9 gas price: $5.39

Average Sept. 2 gas price: $5.41

Difference: 2 cents

4. Oregon

Average Sept. 9 gas price: $5.05

Average Sept. 2 gas price: $4.95

Difference: 10 cents

5. Alaska

Average Sept. 9 gas price: $5.02

Average Sept. 2 gas price: $4.94

Difference: 8 cents

6. Nevada

Average Sept. 9 gas price: $4.98

Average Sept. 2 gas price: $4.87

Difference: 11 cents

7. Idaho

Average Sept. 9 gas price: $4.72
