Cincinnati is clear of any punishment regarding former quarterback Brendan Sorsby's sports gambling, the Cincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported Wednesday, Sept. 2. The NCAA inquiry
into the school is now considered closed.
The inquiry was first made public on July 8 during Big 12 Media Days, and coach Scott Satterfield declined to comment as the investigation was ongoing.
According to court documents, the investigation stemmed from Sorsby trying to access PrizePicks in 2024 while a member of Cincinnati's program, but was denied from entering the app. The attempt was caught by ProhiBet, an application used by the NCAA to enforce sports wagering.
The NCAA started investigating Sorsby in April for making more than $90,000 in bets over four years, including 40 bets involving Indiana when he was on the Hoosiers' roster.
"Earlier this summer, NCAA enforcement staff completed an inquiry into a former Cincinnati student-athlete’s prohibited betting activity during his time at the university," a Cincinnati spokesperson told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "The inquiry is now closed, and the student-athlete was found to have committed a Level III violation."
Sorsby was ruled ineligible by the NCAA on May 18 but was later ruled eligible via temporary restraining order in Lubbock County Court, albeit with a 2-game suspension. The Big 12 then threatened to sanction Texas Tech before the school ruled him ineligible, resulting in Sorsby and the school parting ways.
Sorsby was one of the best-available players in the college football transfer portal this offseason after passing for 2,800 yards with 27 touchdowns to five interceptions, along with 580 rushing yards and nine scores. He's now focused on the 2027 NFL Draft after his college career has come to a close.
