Garrett Mitchell might have snatched the last of the San Diego Padres' postseason hopes at the Petco Park center field wall on Wednesday.
The San Diego Padres were down to their final five outs trailing the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1; Fernando Tatis Jr. stood on first base, so Manny Machado stepped up to the plate as the tying run in the bottom of the eighth. Brewers reliever Abner Uribe worked his sinker at the bottom of the zone, but Machado barreled the second one right at his knees, sending it 406 feet to right center field − right in the spot of the ballpark where the marine layer is at its cruelest to baseballs − for what looked to be a game-tying home run ... until Mitchell reached back over the fence and plucked the ball out of the sea of fans'
hands for the second out.

Machado was visibly upset after the play, grabbing his helmet off his head in frustration. The Padres headed into the bottom of the ninth with one last chance at keeping their season alive.
