A near-total lunar eclipse will be visible from parts of South Florida tonight, weather permitting.
The National Weather Service is predicting mostly clear skies for Miami with a chance for showers during peak eclipse hours, potentially affecting views of what space.com said will be one of the most impressive lunar eclipses until late 2028. The eclipse will last overnight from Aug. 27 to Aug. 28.
During the day, scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected across much of South Florida — Miami has a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms, according to the NWS.
According to space.com, up to 96% of the moon will be covered by Earth's shadow during the event, making for an "exceptionally deep partial lunar eclipse." Across eastern North America,
watchers will have an especially clear view, provided there is no cloud cover in the areas they're watching from.

- Partial eclipse begins: 10:33 p.m. Aug. 27
- Maximum eclipse: 12:12 a.m. Aug. 28
- Partial eclipse ends: 1:51 p.m. Aug. 28
- Penumbral eclipse ends: 3:01 a.m. Aug. 28
